OUR PURPOSE

To prevent Human Trafficking through the education of the community.  We work to alter the course of possible and current victims through intervention and support.

 

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE DARK

What is Human Trafficking?

The illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation.

Locally

According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline Missouri ranks 17th in amount of calls made, and in a study of 10 different metropolitan studies Kansas City was ranked 2nd.

Nationally 

Human Trafficking is the 2nd largest criminal industry and is increasing in cases reported on an annual basis.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does Human Trafficking mean?

Defined by Homeland Security that it is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act (www.dhs.com)

Does it happen that often in the US?

According to the National Human Trafficking Resource hotline and Polaris is an average of 100 calls a day (www.polarisproject.org)

Does it only happen to girls? 

No,  boys are also victims. This is not a gender specific issue

How would I know my child is in danger or what should I be looking out for?

Human trafficking does not discriminate. There are signs, but they are not exclusive to Human Trafficking nor is this a list of all signs as each case is individual. 

Such signs could include:

  • Withdrawal
  • A controlling relationship
  • Receiving extravagant gifts
  • Unexplained bruises
  • Changes in clothing
  • A much older friend that seems to be highly influential to their behavior or communication
